About
The Little Darling

Clean?

We take care of our Little Darling; we take care of you

We sat down one day to write a list of the things we do to clean our Little Darling.  We thought you'd like to see it.

   1. We open the fridge, stock it with sustenance.

   2. We get ourselves a large coffee and a delicious pastry (the Bear’s Claw is especially good) from Joe’s.

   3. We take all the used (and unused) linens, the sheets, towels, etc, fold them, and attempt to put them in the suitcase we bring with us.

   4. We realize that we should have taken out of the suitcase the freshly laundered crisp luxurious linens before we stuff the case with the dirty ones.  So we address this little challenge.  It tires us.

   5. We take a nap.  But of course before we do, we make the bed with a set of linen that we keep in the Little Darling just for that purpose.

   6. We get up and take some small sustenance.

   7. We start with the Water Closet.  We scrub down the shower with a vicious antibiotic cleaning substance that kills every germ on every surface it touches. We scrub the shower floor.  We stand back and admire our handiwork.  The fumes and our vigorous application of muscle and dexterity have made us tired.

   8. We nap.  We get up; have a drink; another Bear’s Claw.  We do some people watching.  We smile and wave and otherwise accost innocent strangers walking past our window.  Some successfully ignore us.

   9. We attack the toilet and sink with the same substance and gusto we spoke of earlier.

  10. (Yep, you guessed it) We nap.

  11. We clean the kitchen counter and the stove top till it gleams.  We take down every glass, dish, pot, pan, cutlery and examine each one for cleanliness.  If there are no obvious stains we put them back.  If there’s a grease spot or two we just wipe it off with a tissue and put the dishes back.

  12. Hah!  Gotcha. We actually wash anything that looks like something we wouldn’t eat off of.

  13. We go out, get the world’s best chocolate chip cookie from the General Store down the street and harass Kevin and Paul, the hardworking owners of the Store.  We run away when they start throwing things at us from behind the counter.

  14. We wipe down every surface in the Little Darling.  Everything starting from the top of the shower curtain rod all the way up, down, around and around until even the chair rail hidden behind the TV has been dusted.  Including the blades of the fan.

  15. We wipe the door knobs, we wipe the phones, we wipe the remotes.  With something with antibiotic properties.

  16. We vacuum the floor.

  17. We get on our hands and knees and wash the floor.

  18. We start to panic because it’s now getting close to the time when you will knocking at the door.  We really shouldn’t nap so much.

  19. We strip the bed (again) and make it up with the clean and luxurious sheets that we reserve just for you.

  20. We take the shower curtain down.  We hang a freshly washed one.

  21. We replace the bedspread and the blanket with freshly cleaned ones.  Why? Well, let us just say that Condé Nast Traveler has confirmed our suspicions about hotel bedspreads.

  22. Oh I forgot to tell you: we also change the mattress pad (it, by the way, is a very fancy one that is guaranteed to protect the mattress against accidental spills and stuff), so we take all the sheets off the bed, change the mattress pad and re-do the bed.  No more naps today.

Try as we might, we always forget something – hopefully, something small.  I guess it just proves that we’re as much a part of the human race as you are.

Last week, for example, someone left OJ, Milk and Ice Cream in the fridge.  I forgot to take it out.  But our next guests used it up and actually thanked us.  We once forgot to check the coffee maker.  Bad move.  Another time we made the bed and forgot to put the flat sheet.  Our guests soon found out.  Fortunately for us, they were returning guests; they forgave us.  A friend of ours ran all around town looking for sheets . . .

Your challenge is to find what we miss and to let us know.  We promise there will be something we forget.  We also promise that we do pretty much everything I’ve listed above, including the naps.

Why?

We want you to feel as comfortable and safe in our Little Darling as we do.  We want you to enjoy your stay and not have to wonder if the floor is safe to walk on.  Or if you should torch the bedspread.
